Big Eyes, Smaller Bellies at Staria Chinar on ul. Makedonia

Fresh from our shopping spree at Grand Mall, my wife and I strolled to the iconic Staria Chinar restaurant (ul. Makedonia), a gem we’ve cherished since our first visit. Nestled in its original location, this eatery holds a special place in our hearts.

For those unfamiliar with Bulgarian lingo, ‘staria’ translates to ‘old’, while ‘Chinar’ is a tree indigenous to the region. Staria Chinar isn’t just any restaurant in Varna; it’s a revered “mehana” – a quintessential Bulgarian tavern. This particular spot boasts authentic clay dishes, a rustic patio, and the tantalizing aroma of an open flame grill.

Our journey began with an appetizer platter, a vibrant medley of fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, and roasted peppers. Accompanied by katuk (a delightful blend of pressed yogurt, feta, and red pepper), snejanka (a tangy mix of yogurt, pickles, dill, and garlic), eggplant spread, hard-boiled eggs, and olives. And let’s not forget the warm, toasted bread on the side – a perfect companion to our starters.

Next, we were treated to grilled duck hearts paired with lutenitssa, a Bulgarian-style ketchup that’s a burst of flavors. My wife swears by this dish, praising its tenderness and rich taste.

Our feast culminated with crispy homemade potato chips sprinkled with fresh feta and my all-time favorite, pork jolan (a succulent slow-cooked pork knuckle). This hearty dish is complemented by roasted potato halves.

With the temperature soaring past 32 degrees, we were satiated halfway through our meal. Breaking away from Bulgarian tradition, we packed the remaining delicacies to savor later at home.

Staria Chinar never disappoints. The ambiance, delectable dishes, and pocket-friendly prices are unparalleled. Our meal, inclusive of four dishes and two refreshing soda waters, totaled 60 leva. Every visit leaves me satiated and elated, firmly believing that Staria Chinar stands head and shoulders above other mehanas in terms of food and service.
