Every Sunday, the heart of the city comes alive with the vibrant hues and tantalizing aromas of the farmers market. While I typically reserve Sundays for relaxation, especially when the mercury soars above 32 degrees, this Sunday was different. Inspired by my wife’s enthusiasm, I decided to join her and our pals, Michelle and Nick, on a delightful market adventure.
Starting our journey from Chaika, we meandered through shaded pathways, enjoying the cool breeze as we made our way to central Varna. Our destination? The bustling market situated right beside the Festival and Congress Centre. It’s a leisurely 25-minute stroll from our Chaika apartment, but every step is worth the treasures that await.
Our haul for the day was nothing short of spectacular: velvety raw milk, tangy fresh yogurt, strawberries so sweet they could tell tales, walnuts that crackled with freshness, and a unique honey concoction that boasted a blend of honey, propolis, bee pollen, royal jelly, and honeycomb. We didn’t stop there! Our basket brimmed with shitake mushrooms, an aromatic olive sourdough bread, mursalski chai (mountain tea), refreshing goji berry iced tea, and a green tea kombucha.
But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. The market is a treasure trove of fresh produce, from crisp veggies to juicy fruits. And for those with a sweet tooth, there’s a vendor who crafts the creamiest homemade gelato you’ll ever taste. From fresh cuts of meat to artisan wines, dried delicacies, homemade cosmetics, and homemade soups, there’s something for everyone.
While you might find the prices a tad on the higher side, every penny is justified by the unparalleled quality. Most of these culinary delights are crafted on quaint farms, with love and care in small batches.
So, if you’re in the mood for a sensory adventure, make your way to the market. Just a tip: bring along a few bags. Trust me, you’ll need them to carry home all the treasures you’ll undoubtedly discover!
